Berber Red #2 (24" x 36")

To collect the pigment I used in this piece, I lived with the with both the nomadic and village-dwelling Amazigh (Berber) people in northern Morocco. The pigment itself was collected in the high Atlas Mountains where these resilient people were still recovering from a devastating earthquake just weeks prior to our visit.
Berber Red predates written history and is actually a family of red tones originally created from red earth (Red Iron Oxide). It evolved to include red pigments and dyes made from Matter Root, Saffron Flowers and more recently, synthetic ingredients. For this painting, I went back to its origins, the earth. We hiked through, and stayed in, a series of Amazigh (Berber) villages on our way through the High Atlas Mountains where we found the red earth we were looking for.
